I was with 7th Comm but had a good friend at HQ Co Comm - named John Behan. You have a photo of him with the caption John Beane. I know it is the same guy because John Behan was killed in an auto accident a week after he got home, just like the John 'Beane' you have pictured. Looks just like him too.

ES Munoz:
Hello Terrance

Yes that was John Behan. We were both with 4th HQ Co Comm in 1969 at Vandengrift. I was at Camp Pendleton when another of our friends, John Garretson told me about John's accident in late 69 or early 70. I have a few more pics of John some where in my storage. Sorry about his loss.

Good Morning Marines of the 4th,
Hope all are well, and you're all set for
Christmas of 2011.
Anyone remember Christmas at Evans, 1967?
Following a prayer service we sang some
Christmas songs, had a snack and plenty of Christmas cheer.
It was kind of special.

Merry Christmas and give a thought up for
Richard and all our fallen warriors.

God Bless !

HQCo 9th marines 1/68-2/69
worked out of VCB 7/68-2/69--we had TRC-27s only. no sweat, they worked. friend at camp carroll had AN/GRC-10s! they worked, too.
many happy times up signal hill, carroll, fsb winchester, etc; rotated home from fsb cunningham just before it was overrun.

Thank you for this site, a ton of memories. just keep on truckin'!

I was a radio operator in the command bunker at Carroll during TET 68. I was working the radios on 1/24 when the convoy coming to Carroll was ambushed. I was the operator who was talking to Capt. Sullivan when he called in a artillery mission in support of his men. At one point his coordinates where his position and Col Miller told me to tell him "be advised that is your position", he answered back "be advised thats where they are"
If he wasn't decorated for this day he certainly should of been, he truly exhibited valor! I will never forget the conversation and always wondered if he survided because we never heard back from him after we let the mission go?

I was not with the marines I was with the united states Army. 14th Combat Engineer Battalion to be exact. My company was at Camp carrol 1n 1969. I think we were their to about Jan 1970. Hard to remember now. Anyway we were tasked with building gun pads and personnel bunkers for the marines stationed there. In all the literature I have read about camp carrol I find nothing about the Army Engineers that were there. Well I am 60 years old now, a long way from 18. lol. health is not good and I really enjoyed my visit to this site. Hope we all can get together in the here after. Thanks for the memories.

Hi,

FIrst, God Bless you all for your service in Vietnam. My late father-in-law served with the Marines, 3rd Marine Division as a radio relay operator. Unfortunately, my father-in-law died before I met him and he refused to speak about his service in Vietnam to my husband and brother in law. We know nothing about his time there and he destroyed everything upon his return home. My father in law joined right out of HS in 1965 and arrived "in country" that same year for one TOD. The memories haunted him for the rest of his life. Now he's resting in the National Cemetery in Ft. Smith, AK.

Peace :

Hello, just wanted to say what a great website you have put together! I am a Seabee Veteran, and served at Camp JJ Carroll from late 1967 to around April 1968. I was assigned to a Detachment charged with building a chow hall, hootches, etc. for 2/9. My main job was to run back and forth from Camp Carroll to the Quang Tri Forward Combat Base, 3-4 times a week. I am finally able to let my kids see through your pictures pretty much what life was like then and there! Thank you very much! SEMPER FI AND CAN DO! Dale S. Hemrick USNMCB10 EO3 (RET.)
